At the outset of my artistic practice, a
concentration is placed on the artist’s body as a
material, as a site of constant negotiation between
inside and outside. I look to bodily excretions such as
oil, snot, blood, semen, and feces as markers of a
psychological state of being in the world. The work is a
by-product of this state of being. Artifacts from the
realm of everyday American consumer goods are
appropriated into the work as metaphorical protagonists,
showcasing both their formal properties and cultural
significance. These artifacts are encoded by what their
makers and generations of users have projected onto
them. By associating a new thought for that object or
material, I invite the viewer to a heightened sense of
their body’s fluid interaction with it’s surroundings.
